The International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination is a United Nations convention which came into force in 1969.

The Convention, a third generation human rights instrument, commits its members to the elimination of racial descrimination. The Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination – (CERD) is the body of independent experts that monitors  the implementation of the Convention.

What is Racial Hatred?

Examples of racial hatred could include: 

Racially offensive material in print or on the internet (including blogs, social media sites, and video sites). E.g.: 

  • posting racially offensive cartoons, ‘memes’ or other images, or
  • racially offensive behaviour or language in a public place, such as a workplace, or at a shopping center where one is:
  • Calling people names that are racist, orelse
  • making racially offensive comments, jokes or gestures.

Standing Against Xenophobia, Anti Semitism, Islamophobia, Afrophobia & Asian Hate

LIVE’s Principles on Multiculturalism include: 

  • ​​An Australian Multiculturalism Act that promotes and values multiculturalism and cultural diversity.
  • All communities to have equal access to education, work and services provided by all levels of government regardless of culture, religion, language, and place of birth.
  • All communities to have equal opportunity for representation and inclusion at local, state, and national levels of government regardless of culture, religion, language, and place of birth.
  • A strong Racial Discrimination Act, including preservation of section 18C.
  • To establish an independent and properly resourced Australian Multiculturalism Commission to protect and promote diversity, to work with human rights and anti-discrimination bodies to create cross-governmental partnerships for diversity, and to implement the Multiculturalism Act.

The following links provides information about the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (‘RDA’) laws that seek to protect people from discriminaton and endeavours to promote equality before the law for people regardless of race, colour, descent or national or ethnic origin.

The RDA also makes racial hatred unlawful.
